ACCESS – ACCelerator System Stability

Within the power system of particle accelerators, a high degree of power quality is required to ensure a stable operation. Deficits in power quality can be for example voltage sags, unbalance and distortion.

The ACCESS Project is a cooperation with Karlsruher Insitut für Technologie (KIT) and is funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF). The goal of the project is a clearer understanding of the accelerator system behavior and improvement of power quality with the use of power electronics.

Alexander Bode is developing a modular multilevel cascaded converter that acts as STATCOM, active filter for low order harmonics and small energy storage. The converter is designed to be placed in the low voltage grid (400 V line to line) in parallel to the load. Special consideration towards operation with unbalanced grid conditions including zero sequence components is given.
