Using Forced Commutated Converters in High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Systems

The use of forced commutated converters with GTOs in HVDC hybrid and two-terminal systems is investigated by means of simulations. The focus is on the system behaviour while internal converter problems are neglected. Both, the current source inverter (CSI) and the voltage source inverter (VSI) are compared. Especially the system behaviour under steady state and during faulty conditions are of major interest. Furthermore the control strategies for both the force commutated converter itself and the whole HVDC system as well as the series and parallel connection of converters are subject of investigation.
